While rumbles of thunder roared overnight, lightning illuminated the sky in many New England towns Monday into Tuesday and it is believed to have sparked two house fires on Cape Cod.

A homeowner in Sandwich told NBC10 Boston she was asleep when she was suddenly awakened by her home shaking and the smell of smoke. The homeowner then immediately called authorities, who responded to her house on Viking Lane.

As the investigation developed, crews determined lightning sparked a fire on the second floor of her home. Crews were able to contain the blaze.

A second lightning strike was reported near a home on Moon Compass Lane. There, a homeowner told firefighters his modem began to smoke after the strike.

"There was a lot of lightning," Sandwich Fire Department Chief John Burke said. "It was continuous every two seconds, it seemed like there was."

Burke said his department experienced some electrical issues when they arrived at the scene of the first fire. Localized flooding made it difficult for crews to get around, according to Burke.

No injuries were reported in either fire.
