Young Mother Killed, Toddler Seriously Injured When Tractor Trailer Strikes Them on Highway

Maine State Police say the woman was holding her toddler son outside of her car and was in the Interstate 95 travel lane when the crash happened

A mother was killed and her son was seriously injured when they were struck by a tractor trailer on a highway north of Lincoln, Maine.

State police say the woman was holding her toddler son outside of her car and was in an Interstate 95 travel lane when the crash happened late Thursday afternoon. Her car was parked in the breakdown lane at the time.

The woman, in her late 20s, was killed instantly. Her son was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with critical injuries.

Troopers notified the woman's husband, who is at the hospital with his son.

The crash closed the northbound lanes of the highway, and traffic was detoured at the Lincoln exit.

The circumstances of the incident are under investigation.

Police expect to release names on Friday.
