    MBTA Begins Early Morning Bus Service Pilot Program

    Officials with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority have started a one-year early morning bus service pilot program to better serve customers in Boston's busiest areas.

    The program, which began Sunday, includes bus stops in downtown Boston and in the Seaport district as early as 3:20 a.m.

    The MBTA said the idea is to serve residents who begin their day early. The expanded routes are part of the transit system's "continued commitment to expanding offerings for those riders who need them most."

    "The T’s expansion into early morning bus service will provide an important opportunity for the changing needs of Massachusetts’ workforce," Gov. Charlie Baker said. "Throughout this one-year pilot, the MBTA will be able to gather important information about changes in bus ridership and analyze that data to better inform future transportation plans around the Greater Boston area."

    Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack said the launch of the program demonstrates the MBTA's commitment to putting customers first.

    MBTA officials said changes include additional service on existing routes. Other routes will extend beyond their normal end points during the early morning hours to provide direct service to downtown Boston and Logan Airport.

    "These new early morning routes are here for the people who make Boston run," MBTA General Manager Luis Manuel Ramírez said. "We know that getting downtown before the sun rises can be a challenge, and our vision is to offer more service for riders who need accessible, affordable, and reliable options in their neighborhoods."
