MBTA Bus Driver Suspended After Confrontation

The MBTA has suspended a bus driver after a confrontation with a woman last Wednesday, officials confirm.

Transit police are searching for the woman who threw a drink at a bus operator in Roxbury.

Video of the incident was posted on Facebook by "WorldStar Fights."

Someone with a camera on the MBTA bus along the Roxbury line started recording, then you could see a woman with a small child say "Come on, let's go."

She then assaults the bus driver by throwing a drink at her.

The woman gets off the bus, grabbing the child.

That's when then the bus driver also gets off the bus, appears to take a swing, and what looks like an altercation ensues on the stairs, all while the child is beside the woman.

MBTA Transit police confirm this happened Aug. 19 just before 3:30 p.m. on Warren Street in Roxbury.

The MBTA says the bus driver has now been suspended with pay, pending an investigation. Officials say it is likely she will face charges.

But transit police want to know who the woman in the video is. They say she was upset because the bus operator had asked her to pay a fare.

Joe Pesaturo, the MBTA's spokesperson, says it's not clear why the woman felt like she didn't have to pay the fare. He added that it is likely charges will be filed against her as well.

"While it's very clear that the passenger was the instigator, it's incumbent upon the bus operator to demonstrate restraint and allow police to handle such a matter," he said in a statement. "Two wrongs do not make a right."

The MBTA says they're now looking at their own video from the cameras on the bus.

They're also going through witness reports.

There's no timeline on their investigation, they say.
