A longtime MBTA bus driver is at fault for a crash with a school bus early Monday morning in Boston's Egleston Square, according to an update on the investigation released by the MBTA Monday afternoon.
There were no children aboard the Boston Public School bus at the time; the five MBTA bus passengers reported minor injuries and were either treated at the scene or transported to local area hospitals.
The accident occurred just after 5:30 a.m., when a 57-year-old MBTA driver of a #44 bus ran a flashing red light and collided with a school bus that had already entered the intersection, according to a statement from Transit Police Department Superintendent Richard Sullivan.
The Monday afternoon statement reversed an earlier MBTA statement, which had said the BPS driver was at fault. The matter still remains under investigation as of Monday afternoon, although Sullivan said that the MBTA bus operator - a 20-year employee of the agency - will be issued a citation for failure to stop.
