Foes Dub Maine Anti-Immigrant Event ‘White Supremacist Picnic'

The event organizer says the group meets about once a month to "protect the culture and way of life Maine has enjoyed for centuries"

Opponents of an anti-immigrant group's gathering in central Maine are distributing postcards that characterize the event as a "white supremacist picnic."

Maine for Mainers is holding its event in Canaan this weekend. The administrator of the group's Facebook page is Tom Kawczynski, who was fired from a job as Jackman town manager last year after touting what he called "white civil rights."

He tells the Portland Press Herald the group meets about once a month to "protect the culture and way of life Maine has enjoyed for centuries."

The postcard was distributed anonymously on the street where the meeting's scheduled to take place.

Maine for Mainers member Camille Patterson denies the characterization of the event as a white supremacist gathering. She says she opposes use of taxpayer money for immigrants.
