A Maine school bus driver is facing several charges after being pulled over for driving erratically with a team of high school field hockey players on board, according to police.
The driver was bringing a team of Biddeford High School students back from a field hockey game Saturday night around 8 p.m. on Interstate 95 in Scarborough when a state trooper noticed the bus was speeding and not staying in one lane, Maine State Police said in a statement.
When the trooper stopped the bus, he says he observed that the driver, 68-year-old Richard Tanguay of Biddeford, seemed to be impaired. He administered field sobriety tests and then brought Tanguay to a county jail for a breathalyzer and drug test.
Tanguay was charged with allegedly operating under the influence of drugs and driving to endanger, police said. He was released on $500 bail and will appear in court in January.
Maine State Police say they notified Biddeford School District of the incident, but it is not yet clear what action the school may take.
