Maine Gov. Paul LePage: AG, Treasurer Should Step Down

Maine's Republican governor is following through on his vow to call for the Democratic attorney general to step down. He's also calling for the independent treasurer to do the same.

Gov. Paul LePage tweeted Tuesday that he sent letters dated the day before to gubernatorial candidates Attorney General Janet Mills and Treasurer Terry Hayes asking them to resign or take a leave of absence. The governor said they should run their political campaigns without the appearance of impropriety or conflict of interest.

Hayes said she won't step down. Mills spokesman Scott Ogden said she'll continue to do her job.

LePage has long been at odds with Mills, and has sued her for declining to represent him in court. The term-limited governor has also sparred with Hayes over bond disputes.
