Maine Legislature Approves Naming Bridge for Slain Deputy

    Clear the Air

The Maine Legislature has approved a bill that would name a bridge over the Kennebec River in Norridgewock after slain Somerset County sheriff's deputy Eugene Cole.

The bill to name the $22 million span the Corporal Eugene Cole Memorial Bridge, has been passed by both the House and Senate. It now heads to the desk of Republican Gov. Paul LePage.

Cole was shot and killed April 25 while on patrol in Norridgewock.

John D. Williams was arrested after a four-day manhunt by state, local and federal authorities. He has pleaded not guilty to murder charges in the death of Cole.

The Morning Sentinel reports the move to name the bridge for Cole has the support of local officials.

Construction on the bridge was completed in 2011.
