Maine Man to Be Sentenced for Pipe Beating Death

A Maine man convicted in the pipe-beating death of another man is scheduled to be sentenced.

Jason Cote of Palmyra contended that he killed the victim in self-defense, but prosecutors say he delivered the fatal blow while the victim was defenseless on the floor.

The sentencing was scheduled for Friday in Skowhegan.

Cote was convicted in December of murder in the death of Ricky Cole. Cote testified he feared the victim, who was larger and older, sported an R.I.P. tattoo on his neck and had conversations with an imaginary friend who told him to hurt people.

Cole's body was found in his blood-spattered mobile home July 18, 2013. DNA samples taken from Cote's clothing the day after the killing matched the DNA from Cole's blood.
