Maine Seeing Historic Amounts of Snow This January

It’s been a winter with hardly any snow around Boston, but it’s a different story in Northern Maine.

Caribou, in far Northern Maine, is in the midst of its snowiest January on record. So far, just over 50 inches of snow has fallen this month, with more on the way this weekend.

The prior record was 44.5 inches in January 1994.

The seasonal total to date of 101.9 inches also sets a new record.

For comparison, Boston has seen just 1.8 inches of snow so far this winter.

Two feet of snow is on the ground across much of Northern Maine, prompting a warning from officials. Residents are asked to clear snow from their roofs to avoid leaks or collapses.
