Elderly man killed after slamming into paving roller

An 89-year-old man was killed in a crash Monday morning on the Maine Turnpike in Gray.

Police say Henry Roy of Lewiston crashed into a construction barrel before slamming into a paving roller while driving northbound on the highway.

Roy was pinned inside his car. After he was freed, he was transported to Central Maine Medical Center, where he later died.

The roller's operator was also hospitalized with leg injuries.

The crash backed up traffic for 10 miles.
