$2K Bail for Man Accused of Attacking Police Officer

Boston Police say the officer was monitoring New Year's Eve celebrations in his vehicle when the man approached him and began punching him

A man accused of attacking a Boston police officer on New Year's Day was arraigned Monday morning.

Andrew Bowman, 23, of Everett, Massachusetts, has been ordered held on $2,000 cash bail.

Boston police say an officer was monitoring New Year's Eve celebrations in his vehicle when Bowman approached him and began punching him through the cruiser’s open window.

"The defendant approached the driver side window of a Boston police cruiser, asked the officer sitting inside if he'd heard about the war and then started repeatedly striking the officer in the face," ADA Eric Anderson said.

The officer fought back and Bowman ran, eventually taken into custody allegedly attempting to scale a gate in the parking garage.

"I think the situation is a bit bizarre in and of itself," said defense attorney Daniel Occena, "He's a good kid, his father's here, his family's here in strong support, college grad, doesn't have an adult criminal history."

Defense attorney Daniel Occena says he cannot comment on whether his client was under the influence.

"There's a recollection issue, I don't think he necessarily recalls what happened," Occena said.

The officer was taken to the hospital to be treated, but has since been released.

Bowman is due back in court Feb. 4.
