A man was arrested on drunken driving charges for the second time early Monday morning after smashing his car into a pipe on a Cape Cod construction site, according to police in Yarmouth.
As officers approached his vehicle, Daniel Creedon kept telling them, "I'm sorry. I'm really sorry," according to a news release from Yarmouth police Tuesday.
Creedon, 25, allegedly drove his black sedan around a barrier and into a closed-down section of Route 28 in West Yarmouth just after midnight. That part of the road was marked with detour signs, traffic cones and police cruisers flashing their blue emergency lights, police said.
Officers tried to stop the car with their sirens but it kept going, so the police cruisers gave chase, according to police. The car drove under a backhoe, clipping it it with its side mirror, before hitting a large pipe that was lying across the road.
Creedon was ordered to turn off the car and get out, which is when he allegedly apologized. Officers approaching the Hyannis resident could detect signs of intoxication and smell alcohol, police said.
Creedon was found to be intoxicated after a series of field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for his second operating under the influence charge, police said.
Creedon was expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Barnstable District Court on charges of OUI liquor - 2nd offense, operating a motor vehicle negligently and marked lanes violation. It's unclear if he has an attorney.
