Man Accused of Attacking Woman, Setting Home on Fire

A Massachusetts man is facing a number of charges, including attempted murder, in connection with an arson fire which destroyed a home in Wareham last week.

Mondel Johnson, 40, of East Wareham, was taken into custody in Fall River Thursday night by Wareham police. In addition to attempted murder, he's been charged with arson of a dwelling house and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

The fire at 36 Restful Lane destroyed the home in the early morning hours of March 29.

Initially, police said there was a person unaccounted for; however, police later said through an investigation into the cause of the fire that detectives determined Johnson had attacked a woman inside the home, doused her with a fluid and proceeded set the home on fire.

The victim was able to escape and run to a nearby residence for help. The victim, who had not been identified, was treated and released from Tobey Hospital.

Johnson is being held without bail pending his arraignment at Wareham District Court on Friday morning. It's unclear if he has an attorney.
