Man Attacks Officer With Knife in East Longmeadow, Mass.

Officers opened fire on man following attack

Police say a Massachusetts man was shot Friday night after he assaulted an East Longmeadow police officer with a knife.

Authorities said they had obtained a warrant for Clifford Ahern, 59, of East Longmeadow, for assault and battery on a family member and were attempting to pull him over in his vehicle.

After a brief interaction with an officer, police say Ahern sped away and drove to his house.

When Ahern got out of his vehicle, police said he pulled out a knife and attacked one of the officers who had followed him to the house.

The officer’s shirt was torn by the attack and he suffered minor injuries.

Police said another officer on the scene discharged his gun following the attack, striking Ahern.

Ahern was transported to Bay State Medical Center in Springfield where he is listed in critical but stable condition.

The incident remains under investigation by the Hampden District Attorney’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit. It's unclear what charges Ahern will face.
