Police: Museum Receptionist Foiled Abduction

James Cavallaro of Bath, Maine, was out on bail on an unrelated charge

Police say a Maine man was arrested after a museum employee thwarted his attempt to grab a 2-year-old girl and leave the building.

Police say the girl was at the Maine State Museum on Tuesday with her grandmother, who had turned her back to hang up coats. Police say a museum receptionist saw 58-year-old James Cavallaro grab the girl. They say the receptionist intervened, causing him to release her.

Police say they arrested Cavallaro in the Augusta museum's parking lot without resistance.

Cavallaro, of Bath, was charged with assault and violating his conditions of release. He had been out on bail on an unrelated charge.

A phone number for Cavallaro was disconnected. It is unclear if he has an attorney. Police say he is now at the Kennebec County Jail.
