A man was charged with the armed robbery of a Massachusetts bank after police chased him through the woods Monday.
Massachusetts State Police responded around 9:30 a.m. to a robbery at People's Union Bank in Hatfield, in which they say the suspect was "reportedly armed with a stick." The suspect allegedly fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
About 10 minutes later, a state police lieutenant tried to stop a Jeep Liberty on Interstate 91 southbound in Northampton. Police say the driver refused to stop, then bailed out on I-91 in Holyoke and ran across the highway into the woods.
State police and police from Holyoke, Easthampton, Northampton and Hatfield took part in a search aided by K-9 units. Shortly before 2 p.m., 30-year-old Michael Taylor was found behind the Holyoke Canoe Club and arrested, police said.
Authorities say a backpack filled with money stolen from the bank was found near the suspect.
Taylor, whose address is listed in Boston's Mattapan neighborhood but who police believe is living in Springfield, was charged with armed robbery, resisting arrest and failure to stop for police. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.
