Paul Orchard of Peru is charged with killing 57-year-old Paula Nuttall in the family home on Oct. 11.

A Maine man charged with killing and sexually assaulting his mother-in-law in front of his 6-year-old daughter has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he is competent to stand trial.

Paul Orchard of Peru is charged with killing 57-year-old Paula Nuttall in the family home on Oct. 11.

The Sun Journal reports that prosecutors and defense attorney Sarah Glynn have submitted motions requesting an evaluation to determine if the 33-year-old Orchard should be held criminally responsible and whether he was insane or suffered from an abnormal condition of mind at the time of the alleged offenses.

According to court documents, Orchard has previously been treated for a mental illness.

He told police he was on a "vapor high" from polyurethane fumes while treating Nuttall's floor.
