Man Charged With Motor Vehicle Homicide After Pedestrian Death

Devyn Bannister, of Pittsfield, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to motor vehicle homicide while under the influence

Charges against a man accused of being under the influence of alcohol and drugs when he struck a pedestrian in December have been upgraded now that the victim has died.

The Berkshire Eagle reports that 23-year-old Devyn Bannister, of Pittsfield, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to motor vehicle homicide while under the influence. He had previously pleaded not guilty to OUI charges.

Police say Bannister had been drinking and took a Vicodin before striking 74-year-old Arthur Meyrick in Pittsfield on Dec. 8.

Meyrick was hospitalized and died Jan. 28.

The state medical examiner determined that Meyrick died from injuries sustained in the crash, leading to the amended charges.

Bannister was held on $10,000 bail, even though his lawyer asked he be released to undergo substance abuse treatment.
