Man Convicted in 1998 Shooting Death of Teen Paroled

Elsido Pereyra fatally shot 17-year-old Ricardo Torres on May 3, 1998.

A former Lawrence, Massachusetts, market owner convicted of second-degree murder for shooting a teenager in the back in 1998 has been paroled.

The Eagle-Tribune reports that the state Parole Board unanimously approved the release of 50-year-old Elsido Pereyra on June 10.

His release comes with the condition that he be deported to his native Dominican Republic.

Pereyra fatally shot 17-year-old Ricardo Torres on May 3, 1998.

The shooting was sparked by a dispute that originally involved Pereyra's brother and Torres' girlfriend. The two men fought, and Pereyra shot Torres in the back as he was running away.

The Parole Board determined that Pereyra had "demonstrated rehabilitative progress," and "appears empathetic and insightful" about his behavior that led to the shooting.
