Man Drowns After Fleeing From Police

A Grafton, Massachusetts, man was pronounced dead after an apparent drowning while fleeing from police.

A Grafton, Massachusetts, man died Sunday night after he dove into Lake Quinsigamond while fleeing from UMass Police, according to the Worcester District Attorney's Office.

The DA's Office confirms Joseph Martin was parked in the restricted area of the UMass campus with an open container of alcohol and a bag of white powder inside the vehicle. When a UMass police officer asked Martin to exit the car, he ran for the lake.

Martin was pulled from the water off Regatta Point by the Worcester Fire Department Dive Team and pronounced dead at UMass Memorial Hospital at 7:45 p.m. The Office of the Chief Medial Examiner is investigating the apparent drowning.

State Police assigned to the Worcester County DA's Office are investigating.
