Part of Tree Knocks Man Off Cherry Picker, Killing Him in Leominster, Massachusetts

A worker fell to his death after being knocked from a cherry picker by part of a tree Thursday in Leominster, Massachusetts.

Police said 26-year-old Nicholas Kallio of Fitchburg was working at 79 Flaggler Rd. when the branch fell around 12:30 p.m.

The victim cut part of the tree, and police say it fell in a direction he did not anticipate, causing him to fall 60 feet.

"He was at the top of that tree," said Dennis Owen, who was watching the crew from Affordable Landscaping and Tree Service take down an 80-foot pine behind his home. "It fell and hit those other two trees and it hit and it came back towards that bucket."

Leominster Police initially told necn that a branch from a different tree had fallen on him.

Owen called 911 after the incident.

"Just a good kid," a friend, who did not want to be identified, said of the victim. "In the ROTC in school. Just a good kid."

According to police, the man was not wearing a safety harness.
