Man Shot and Killed in Car in New Haven

A man was shot and killed in a vehicle on Chapel Street in New Haven on Thursday night and police are searching for the person who killed him.

Police officers, firefighters and medics responded to Chapel Street, near Ella T. Grasso Boulevard, around 7:40 p.m. after gunshots were reported and found 29-year-old Antoine Heath, of West Haven.  Heath was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:09 p.m.

Police said he had been shot in the chest and police believe he was in the vehicle when the shot or shots were fired.

The shooter remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous.

Authorities are still working on a specific description of the shooter, but said they believe Heath was targeted.

Witnesses told police that someone with shoulder-length braids or dread-locks fled from the area into Edgewood Park.

Witnesses were unsure of the gender of the suspect, according to police. It was also reported that a dark colored sedan sped off after the shooting.

Chapel Street remains closed between Ella T. Grasso Boulevard and Yale Avenue on Friday morning.

Police actively searching Edgewood Park on Thursday night and asked the public to avoid the area.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Division and Bureau of Investigation are investigating.
