Man Gets 3-Plus Years for Copper Theft

A man caught stealing copper piping from a vacant Waterville building in July has been sentenced to more than three years in jail.

Sean Rancourt of Waterville was sentenced to three years and four months behind bars and was also ordered to pay $1,000 in restitution for the damage he caused.

Police reported finding the 29-year-old Rancourt hiding under debris in the attic and an accomplice hiding under the basement stairs on July 6. They also had tools and cut lengths of copper. The two were charged with burglary, aggravated criminal mischief and possession of burglar's tools.

The Morning Sentinel reports that in exchange for a guilty plea to the aggravated criminal mischief charge, the other two charges were dismissed.

His accomplice's case is pending.
