A judge has sentenced a Providence man to 30 years in prison for his role in a shooting that killed a 12-year-old girl in Providence last year.
Luis Gonzalez, known as "Fat Boy," was found not guilty of the most serious charges in the killing of Aynis Vargas, but was convicted of felony assault and weapons charges. He was sentenced Friday in Providence Superior Court.
The girl was attending a graduation party in Providence when she and three women were shot. The three women survived. Prosecutors say Gonzalez and four other gang members targeted the party because it was in a rival gang's neighborhood, and they sought revenge for a friend's killing.
The shooter, Branden Castro, pleaded guilty and is serving life in prison. Three other people pleaded guilty.
