A Connecticut man convicted of molesting a boy for over five years and giving him a sexually transmitted disease has been sentenced to 45 years in prison.
Ronald Smith of Bloomfield was sentenced Monday in a Hartford court. The 48-year-old was convicted in June of two counts of first-degree sexual assault, one count of fourth-degree sexual assault and other charges.
Prosecutors say the boy received a "life sentence" when he was infected with herpes. The assaults took place in Hartford, Windsor and Windsor Locks from when the boy was nine until he was 13.
The boy's mother defended Smith, her former boyfriend, in court, saying that she didn't think he did anything to her child.
The judge also sentenced Smith to a lifetime registration as a sex offender.
