Man In Custody After 2 Air Rifles Recovered Outside School

A suspect is in custody after two air rifles were recovered outside of a school in Northampton, Massachusetts.

John F. Kennedy Middle School went into lockdown, along with other schools in the district on Thursday afternoon, when a staff member at JFK saw a man with a gun in the rear parking lot just before dismissal shortly after 2 p.m.

When police arrived on the scene, the man was sitting on the ground next to his car. Officers recovered the two air rifles and placed the man under arrest; his name has not been released at this time.

The school district sent out robo calls to parents, alerting them of the situation.

"My first thought, honestly, was a shooting," parent Jenna Rodriguez told WWLP. "It's been, unfortunately, more common than we've seen. That was my first thought and hoping that wasn't what was going on."

Northampton students will be wearing black to school on Friday as a show of unity.
