A 29-year-old man was hurt when a firework exploded near the former D.C. Moore School in East Haven Monday and police said he is in stable condition.

East Haven Police said they received several 911 calls reporting an explosion around 1:14 p.m.

The injured man, a summer worker, came into contact with the firework during the course of his work and suffered a serious injury to one hand, and injuries to the other hand and his abdomen as a result of the explosion, according to police.

Police identified the man as James Bassett and said he was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Mayor Joseph Maturo said the man is a supervisor who oversees teens who work summer cleanup jobs for the town.

Maturo said the victim was in surgery and his injuries were serious but not life-threatening.

Authorities said there is no danger to anyone else. Police said the area has been thoroughly searched to ensure there are no additional items that could cause harm.

The East Haven Fire Marshal's Office, state fire marshal, and East Haven Police Detective Division are investigating.

The D.C. Moore School has been closed for about two years.
