Man Pleads Not Guilty in Double Fatal Crash

James Ainsworth was held on $100,000 bail at his arraignment Monday in Hampshire Superior Court

A Springfield, Massachusetts, man charged with being high on heroin when he crashed his SUV into a motorcycle in Easthampton, killing a father and daughter, has pleaded not guilty.

James Ainsworth was held on $100,000 bail at his arraignment Monday in Hampshire Superior Court after pleading not guilty to negligent motor vehicle homicide while under the influence of drugs, negligent motor vehicle homicide while under the influence of alcohol, and manslaughter by motor vehicle.

Prosecutors say 62-year-old Edward McGrath of Holyoke, was riding with his 29-year-old daughter, Brittney McGrath of Brooklyn, New York, in August, when Ainsworth's vehicle crossed into their lane and hit them head-on. They died at the scene.

Police say Ainsworth and his passenger had both taken heroin.

The 45-year-old Ainsworth's lawyer did not argue for lower bail.
