A Hull, Massachusetts, man arrested when police investigating a reported break-in at his home discovered an explosive device in the house has pleaded not guilty.
The Patriot Ledger reports that Kevin Butler was held on $1,000 bail at his arraignment Wednesday in Hingham District Court on charges of possession of an explosive device, possession of anabolic steroids and disturbing the peace.
Officers responded to the 26-year-old Butler's home Tuesday for a report that a vehicle and a safe containing cash had been stolen.
During the investigation, police found what they described as an approximately five-inch cylinder packed with explosive powder.
The state bomb squad neutralized it.
Butler says a friend gave him the explosive the night before July Fourth.
The break-in remains under investigation. The vehicle was recovered.
