Person of Interest in Fatal Worcester Stabbing in Custody, Police Say

Authorities in Worcester had been searching for Thomas Bergstrom since Wednesday night when 34-year-old Jennifer Vazquez-Rivera was found stabbed multiple times on her bedroom floor

A man wanted for questioning in connection with the fatal stabbing of a woman in Worcester, Massachusetts, earlier this week has turned himself in to police.

Thomas Bergstrom, 36, turned himself in at the Blackstone Police Department Friday afternoon, police tweeted. He was arrested on a warrant for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Authorities in Worcester had been searching for Bergstrom since Wednesday night when 34-year-old Jennifer Vazquez-Rivera was found stabbed multiple times on her bedroom floor at her home on Lapierre Street.

Vazquez-Rivera was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center but died a short time later, police said.

A witness who heard the victim scream had gone to Vazquez-Rivera's residence and saw a man holding a knife, according to court documents. The man allegedly ran out of the home wearing a blanket.

The witness told police the man looked like Bergstrom who was dating the victim.

Investigators learned that Bergstrom took a cab to Lapierre Street a half hour prior to the stabbing.

A friend of the victim, Layla Torres, said she is in disbelief over the death of the woman she has known since kindergarten.

"You never saw somebody so pure so innocent, so warm," Torres said. "What monster would pray on somebody like her?"

Berstrom has a history of violence, authorities said. He was most recent charged with assault and aggravated rape in a separate case in December. His attorney said those charges were reduced and he was released on $1,500 bail.

"I was worried about him. I told her that I didn’t feel comfortable with him," Torres said.

Bergstrom will answer to the assault and battery with a dangerous weapon charge in a Worcester court on Monday. So far, charges have not been upgraded.
