A witness who heard the victim scream had gone to Vazquez-Rivera's residence and saw a man holding a knife, according to court documents. The man allegedly ran out of the home wearing a blanket.

The witness told police the man looked like Bergstrom who was dating the victim.

Investigators learned that Bergstrom took a cab to Lapierre Street a half hour prior to the stabbing.

A friend of the victim, Layla Torres, said she is in disbelief over the death of the woman she has known since kindergarten.

"You never saw somebody so pure so innocent, so warm," Torres said. "What monster would pray on somebody like her?"

Berstrom has a history of violence, authorities said. He was most recent charged with assault and aggravated rape in a separate case in December. His attorney said those charges were reduced and he was released on $1,500 bail.
