Manchester, NH Public Libraries Eliminate Late Fees for Children

Library officials in Manchester say they will stop issuing late fees for children's books in order to encourage children to return to the library.

City officials say the policy change does not affect books that are lost or damaged. Library official Karyn Isleb says the change is an attempt to make children more comfortable using the library.

The new policy is getting approval from parents. Manchester resident Rebecca Hebert says the new policy is "family-centric," and will encourage more children to check out books.

Library officials say the elimination of these fees will cost the library about $8,000 a year. Administrators will work with the city to try to find another way of making up the lost revenue.
