Family and Friends of Marathon Bombing Survivor Killed Overseas Speaks

McGrath, a student at Northeastern University, was remembered as a "bright light"

Friends and family continue to mourn the loss of 23-year-old Boston Marathon bombing survivor Victoria McGrath, killed in a Ferrari crash in Dubai over the weekend.

Former Navy medic Alicia Shambo who helped comfort McGrath from the medical tent at the marathon into surgery at Tufts Medical Center, said she feels like one of her own children has been taken from this world too soon.

"You have to let your kids follow their dreams, and Victoria had a lot of dreams," Shambo said.

McGrath's parents Jill and Jim McGrath released a statement saying in part: "What Victoria taught all of us was how, against the odds, to respond with determination, humility, and not a single note of bitterness. Let us gather our grief and understand what it truly is — a transmutation of our love for Victoria — and let that understanding motivate us to be constructive as we eventually emerge from this tragedy."

McGrath was on spring break with her Northeastern University roommate and friend 23-year-old Priscilla Perez Torres, who was also killed in the crash.

The alleged driver posted a photo to his Instagram account shortly before the crash with the caption, "Just landed into Dubai, picked up the Ferrari! Don't worry I won't speed."

Shambo said she hopes McGrath is remembered for the vibrant, sensitive young woman she was in life.

"She's a bright light, she's just a good girl," Shambo said.

McGrath had gone back to school after the bombings and was set to graduate from Northeastern in May.
