4 New England States Featured in Top 10 List for Best Place to Raise Family

If you live in New England, chances are that you live in one of the best states in the country to raise a family.

A recent study from WalletHub.com compared the 50 states across 49 key indicators of family-friendliness. The data set ranges from median family salary to housing affordability to unemployment rate.

Three New England states made up the top five. All six New England states were in the top 16.

Massachusetts was named the second-best state to raise a family in by Wallethub.com, a personal finance website based out of Washington D.C. Vermont was ranked fourth and New Hampshire, fifth on the list.

The five categories that made up the data set are: family fun, health and safety, education and child care, affordability and socioeconomics.

Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts respectively have the lowest infant mortality rates in the country, according to the list. Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire were also listed as the three states with the fewest violent crimes per capita. New Hampshire was listed as the state with the lowest percentage of families in poverty.

Rhode Island breaks the list's top 10 with the number nine spot, while Connecticut is ranked 13 and Maine at 16.

Data used to create the ranking was collected from the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics and the National Center for Education Statistics among other sources.

Wallethub named Minnesota the best state to raise a family in while New Mexico came in last.
