Massachusetts Boy Receives Commendation For Pulling Man From Water

Jaydon Dancy pulled kayaker from Palmer’s Cove in Salem

A Massachusetts boy is being hailed a hero for risking his life to save another.

Jaydon Dancy, 10, of Salem, says he had no idea when dignitaries started showing up at a school assembly Tuesday morning what their intentions were, but quickly realized they were there for him.

“It was overwhelming,” said his mother Michelle. “I was so proud. I’m still amazed by what he did.”

It was August when Jaydon and his friends were fishing at Palmer’s Cove in Salem.

Suddenly they noticed a kayaker who had fallen out of his boat.

“I was like sir, 'could you swim?,' and he didn’t respond so I just swam in, got him, got his kayak, brought him to shore,” Jaydon told necn.

Tuesday in school, Jaydon received commendations from the city of Salem and the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

The fifth grader was honored for his courage, bravery and quick thinking, as he single-handedly brought the boater to shore.

He also received a shirt, hat and patch from the Salem Police Department.

Sadly the gentleman whom Jaydon brought to shore passed away, but Jaydon’s mom wants that family to know their loved one wasn’t alone that day and that Jayden tried his best.
