A corrections officer has been accused of trying to smuggle opioids into a Massachusetts prison.
The U.S. Justice Department announced Wednesday that William Holts, 51, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, was arrestesd charged with one count of conspiracy to possess a controlled substance with intent to distribute on Wednesday.
Federal prosecutors say Holts, a Massachusetts Correctional Institute employee, told an inmate he was willing to smuggle 100 Suboxone strips into Massachusetts Correctional Institute Norfolk for $2,000 in cash in late April, and that Holts was recorded on a series of calls arranging to obtain the drugs and the cash.
Suboxone is a Class III drug designed to treat opioid addiction; however, authorities warn it can be abused and is used as contraband in prison.
Holts will be arraigned on Friday. It's unclear if he has an attorney.
