Mass. Gov. Announces Top Lawyer Is Departing Administration

Gov. Charlie Baker's chief legal counsel is stepping down after four years on the job.

Baker announced Tuesday that Lon Povich will leave state government next month and be replaced by Bob Ross, the current general counsel for the executive office of administration and finance.

Baker made Povich one of his first hires after he was elected in 2014. The Republican governor praised the work of his top legal adviser in helping shape the administration's legislative agenda and screen some 130 judicial appointments.

After winning a second term in November, Baker asked cabinet secretaries and other top officials to let him know soon whether they were onboard for another four years or if they wished to move on.

Povich says he hasn't decided what he'll do next.
