The Massachusetts Legislature may renew a longstanding debate over whether the state should move to a graduated income tax.
A proposal that would allow higher levels of income to be taxed at higher rates, as more than 30 states and the federal government do, could come up Wednesday when lawmakers hold a constitutional convention to discuss the so-called "millionaire tax."
A graduated income tax would go further that the millionaire tax, which calls for a 4 percent surtax only on individuals with annual incomes above $1 million.
Republican Gov. Charlie Baker said Monday he would oppose a graduated income tax, while House Speaker Robert DeLeo and Senate President Karen Spilka, both Democrats, did not immediately offer a position on it.
Voters would have to approve any proposed change to the state constitution.
