Massachusetts Man Faces Several Charges After Stealing From Business, Ramming Into Police Cruiser

A Massachusetts man faces several charges after breaking into a business, stealing merchandise and ramming into a police cruiser.

Police in Chicopee received a call just before 1 a.m. that there was a breaking and entering in progress at Chase Automotive Glass on Granby Rd. The call said a person dressed in dark clothes went into the business and came out carrying merchandise.

When authorities arrived on the scene, they saw a dark SUV with a man standing near it wearing a ski mask. When the suspect saw officers, he immediately attempted to flee. He drove towards the officers, and crashed into one police cruiser.

The suspect, later identifed as Michael Leavy, 61, of Chicopee, became wedged between the cruiser and a telephone pole. After realizing he was stuck, he attempted to flee on foot before officers caught him.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that Leavy had over $3,000 in merchandise from the business. He also had used shaving cream to conceal his license plate numbers.

None of the officers were injured.

Leavy will be in court Thursday.
