Massachusetts Police Sergeant Run Over by Dirt Bike While Trying to Arrest 9 Riders

9 off-road vehicle riders to be arraigned on various charges

A New Bedford, Massachusetts, police sergeant is recovering after being run over by a dirt bike Monday evening while trying to arrest a group of people who were driving their off-road vehicles recklessly.

Police said Sgt. Candido Trinidad, 35, was attempting to arrest 9 people from New Bedford who had been riding their off-road vehicles throughout the city — riding on sidewalks and around trick-or-treaters — when one of the riders struck him.

Trinidad was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for serious but non life-threatening injuries.

The driver that struck Trinidad was identified as Carlos Gonzalez, 24. He has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, driving to endanger, refusing to stop for a police officer, unlawful operation of a recreational vehicle on a roadway, operating a motor vehicle with no license, operating a motor vehicle with no helmet, trespassing, disturbing the peace and resisting arrest.

Also arrested were: Melvin Gonzalez, 18, Eliezer Rosado, 25, Fabio Correia-Tavares, 27, Jonathan Garcia, 26, Alex Pizzaro, 25, Joshua Washburn, 22, Wilfredo Colon, 29, and Elemuel Robles-Maldonado, 32, all of New Bedford.

All arrested will be arraigned Tuesday in New Bedford District Court.
