Mayor: Trash Pickers Costing Town Thousands

Johnston, Rhode Island, Mayor Joseph Polisena believes the town is losing thousands of dollars to trash pickers

The mayor of Johnston, Rhode Island is telling residents to stop going through trash.

Joseph Polisena believes the town is losing thousands of dollars to trash pickers who take used furniture and recyclables off the curb on trash day.

The mayor also says recyclables, especially metal, help bring money to the state, but the pickers are ruining all of that.

Polisena told WJAR, "We're being robbed. We're being robbed. People might say, 'Oh, it's nickels and dimes. Leave them alone.' We'll, they're stealing from the taxpayers. Thousands add up to hundreds of thousands and that adds up to millions. It just has to stop."

Trash picking is against the law, and once on the curb, it becomes town property.
