Mayor Who Died Unexpectedly to Lie in State at City Hall

Residents of Brockton will have a chance to pay final respects to Mayor Bill Carpenter following his unexpected death.

Carpenter's body will lie in state at City Hall on Thursday from noon to 6 p.m. A funeral will be held on Friday.

The 62-year-old Carpenter was pronounced dead after being found unresponsive in his car on Wednesday.

He was in his third term as mayor of the southeastern Massachusetts city and was planning to seek re-election in November.

The Brockton Enterprise reports Carpenter's body was brought to a funeral home on Friday in a somber procession led by state police on motorcycles and with a city fire engine trailing the black hearse.

Dotting the route were several of the mayor's campaign signs with his signature slogan: "It takes a carpenter to build a city."
