Melrose Public Schools to Change Start Times This Fall

Times will be changing for students in Melrose starting next fall.

The school system announced Monday an earlier start for elementary school students and a later start for those students in the middle and high school starting in September.

Elementary students would start at 8:03 a.m. and be released at 2:10 p.m. The middle school and high school would start at 8:15 a.m. and end at 2:41 p.m.

The city started looking into the change in start times for the schools in 2016.

"Over the last several years, as more research has indicated the impact lack of sleep has on older students, we felt adopting this change was in the best interest of our children," said Superintendent Cyndy Taymore.

Some parents say that they support the change.

"If they are exhausted, they're not functioning as well brain wise or any other way. It would be nice to see them get extra sleep in the morning," said parent Mimi Lemay.

The details around the transition are still being finalized between the district and the Melrose Education Association.

There have already been plans put in place to accommodate extracurricular activities and bus schedules.
