Methuen Shooting Victim Dies From His Injuries, Murder Suspect in Custody

Kelvin Frias, 30, of Lawrence has died from his injuries; Remy Salazar, 24, of Lawrence, is in custody and is facing a murder charge

A 30-year-old man who was in critical condition following a shooting in Methuen, Massachusetts, has died and a suspect is in custody, according to officials.

Kelvin Frias, of Lawrence, was rushed Friday to a Boston hospital via helicopter after he was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He died from his injuries Saturday morning, the Essex County district attorney said.

Police responded just before 3 a.m. Friday to the area of 170 Broadway for a reported shooting. There, they found Frias.

Officials investigating the shooting identified 24-year-old Remy Salazar, of Lawrence, as the suspect and said they did not believe it was a random act of violence.

Salazar was tracked to a Nashua, New Hampshire, residence where he was apprehended Friday afternoon on unrelated outstanding warrants.

The Essex State Police detective unit and Methuen police obtained an arrest warrant Saturday afternoon charging Salazar with murder.

"I commend the excellent teamwork among the Mass State Police assets and the Methuen and Nashua, NH police that resulted in the suspect's apprehension without further incident thus eliminating the threat to the public’s safety," Methuen Police Chief Joseph Solomon said.

Salazar is expected to appear in Nashua District Court Monday morning on the outstanding warrants and on a fugitive from justice charge. It's not immediately clear when he will return to Massachusetts to face the murder charge or if he has an attorney.

The investigation is ongoing.
