Ruby, a search and rescue K-9 with the Rhode Island State Police Department, was found safe after missing.

A wayward search and rescue dog who was missing has been found safe, according to Rhode Island State Police.

Officials said Monday that K-9 Ruby ran off near Goddard Memorial State Park in Warwick earlier in the day.

Col. Ann Assumpico says the Australian shepherd and border collie mix disappeared near Ives Street. She didn't say what Ruby was doing there.

She was located around 1 a.m. Tuesday near the area where she went missing, according to state police. The K-9 has since been returned to her handler, Trooper Daniel O'Neil.

Ruby was recently recognized by the American Humane Hero Dog Awards for leading rescuers to an unconscious teen in the woods of Glocester last year.
