Most Power Back in Rhode Island After Violent Storms

National Grid says power has been restored to all but about 200 of its Rhode Island customers who were left in the dark after violent thunderstorms earlier this week.

Most of those who are still waiting for the lights to come back on Friday are in Warwick, West Warwick and Coventry.

The utility reported more than 120,000 customers without power at the height of Tuesday's storms which caused more damage to power lines in Rhode Island than any single weather event since Hurricane Irene in 2011.

State Rep. Jared Nunes has called on Gov. Gina Raimondo to declare a state of emergency and seek federal aid to help with the cleanup from the storms in hard-hit communities.

The governor says such a request is premature until a preliminary damage assessment is completed.
