A motion to put the Biddeford, Maine, police chief and deputy chief on leave amid sex abuse allegations has been deemed illegal.

Necn affiliate WCSH reports the motion against the two was brought up during a city council meeting Tuesday night. Some people showed up to the meeting to protest.

An investigation is underway into sexual abuse accusations against two former officers. Residents of the town have collected signatures on a petition calling for the suspension of the chief and deputy chief.

The attorney added that the council has to follow a legal process to put city employees on leave and that the chief and deputy chief would have to be present.

An excutive session meeting will be held Monday, but it is undsure if the chief and deputy chief will be there.
