Motorist Dies During Victory Lap at Speedway

A man died after winning a race at the Devil's Bowl Speedway in Fair Haven Saturday night, Vermont State Police said.

According to witnesses, the 63-year-old man from New York appeared to have a medical event while conducting the ceremonial victory lap, causing his vehicle to accelerate and strike a wall.

The man was transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 10:54 p.m. He had over 42 years of racing experience and was wearing a seatbelt and helmet at the time of the incident.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Detective Trooper Michael Notte at 802-773-9101.
