Prosecutors say a Maine man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and then evading capture for two months acted out of jealousy. But a defense lawyer says Robert Burton never intended to kill Stephanie Gebo, and that they struggled over her gun after she shot at him.
Burton's murder trial got underway Monday in Bangor. He's charged with fatally shooting the single mother of two at her home in Parkman in June 2015.
Police say Gebo feared Burton and slept with a gun under her pillow after they broke up.
The 40-year-old from Abbot had eluded capture by roaming the woods near where he grew up. He turned himself in August 2015. He had been on the run for 68 days, the longest manhunt in state history.
